State Exec Board

Louise Loomis

     Louise Loomis received BA and MA degrees in music education from the University of New Mexico. Further studies include Orff – Schulwerk training from Denver University, Hamline University, The University of St. Thomas, The University of Nevada – Las Vegas, and the Orff Institute in Salzburg, Austria. She has received the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra Teacher of the Year Award, the John M. Batcheller Award for Excellence in Teaching Elementary Music, and the Albuquerque Arts Alliance Bravo Award for Excellence in Arts Education. Louise taught elementary music classes for the Albuquerque Public Schools, San Felipe Pueblo, and Manzano Day School. She teaches Music Rhapsody classes for young children, prepares children’s choruses for the Santa Fe Opera and Opera Southwest, and conducts the Albuquerque Youth Symphony Program’s Preparatory Choir. She now teaches music classes for third, fourth, and fifth graders at Sunset Mesa School in Albuquerque.



Dr. John Flanery

     Dr. John Flanery is the Director of Choral Activities at New Mexico State University. At NMSU

he supervises the masters in choral conducting program, teaches choral literature and choral

conducting, and oversees the University Singers, Concert Choir, and the Masterworks Chorus.

Prior to his arrival at NMSU in 2015, John spent nine years as associate choral director at the

University of Southern Mississippi. His Doctor of Musical Arts and Master’s degrees are both in

Choral Conducting from the University of Kentucky. He holds a Bachelor’s of Music Education

degree from Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, Iowa.


     John has served ACDA in various positions including having served as the Mississippi Chapter

president for three years. In service to national ACDA, John has been on the poster selection

committee for both the national conferences in Dallas for 2013 and Salt Lake City in 2015.


     As a high school music educator in the state of Iowa for nine years, John conducted concert

choirs, madrigal dinners, show choirs, jazz choirs, and many other ensembles. John and his wife,

Juliane, have five children – Elias, Cecelia, Josephine, Lucinda, and William.

John’s goals for New Mexico ACDA are varied and numerous.


– Grow membership through all contingencies in the state from elementary teachers

through high school educators, from College/University faculty and students through

church musicians

– Create, develop and empower a full ACDA Board

– Generate new events that will appeal to a broader membership

– Continue to support and develop the Youth All-State Honor Choirs

– New and improved website that is functional and useful to our organization

– Encourage and promote greater participation in regional and national ACDA events



Geri Brink – President

     Geri Brink received both her Bachelor in Music Education and her Master in Vocal Performance from New Mexico State University. She has taught in the Las Cruces area for many years:  at Las Cruces Catholic Schools, Picacho Middle School and Lynn Middle School. She is currently the choral director at Las Cruces High School where her groups consistently achieve top ratings at festivals and competitions across the country. She is President of the New Mexico American Choral Director’s Association (ACDA), a member of New Mexico Music Educators Association (NMMEA), National Association for Music Educators (NAfME) and the National Educators Association (NEA). Geri is certified in all three levels of CREATING ARTISTRY, a choral conducting workshop given at Butler University in Indianapolis under the direction of Henry Leck. She is also certified to Level 2 in the Orff-Schulwerk teaching method. Geri has been co-director of the Doña Ana Youth Choir for over twenty years. She has proudly served as a music minister at Holy Cross Catholic Church for over twenty-five years. She and her husband, Gerry, have been married for thirty-six years. They have two grown children and five grandchildren.


Derek Gilmour – Treasurer

     Derek Gilmour currently teaching choir at Mayfield High School (5A) in Las Cruces, New Mexico. He holds a Master’s degree in Choral Conducting from TCU and a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Eastern New Mexico University. Four of his choirs at Mayfield HS received superior rating during the 2014 Music Performance Assessment and twelve of his students participated in the 2014 NMMEA All-State Choirs. While at TCU, Derek directed the TCU Women’s choir and directed two recital choirs. His teachers in the areas of score-study, conducting, and rehearsal technique include Dr. Dennis Shrock, Dr. Jason Paulk, and Dr. Rodney Eichenburger. Derek is also an accomplished singer. He performed Schubert’s Die Winterreise in 2013 and Schumann’s Dichterliebe with vocal coach and pianist Kayla Paulk in 2010. Previous opera roles include Figaro in Barbiere di Siviglia and Faulke in Die Fledermaus. His voice teachers include Ms. Amanda De Rycke, Mr. David Brock (TCU), Dr. Jean Wozencraft-Ornellas (ENMU) and Dr. Jason Vest (ENMU)
